Brief description of site

Alton Towers has parkland, pleasure grounds and gardens of around 135 hectares. The grounds were laid out as a romantic 'elysium'. Part of the site is now a theme park.

Brief history of site

Alton Towers was first created in the early-19th-century. The main works were undertaken by the fifteenth Earl of Shrewsbury, who died in 1827. The work was completed by his son, who died in 1852.
