Brief description of site

The present grounds include the remnants of an 18th-century landscape park and a 19th-century terraced garden. At its most extensive the park covered about 160 hectares, but only about 40 hectares remain.

Brief history of site

The site originated in the medieval period as the manor of Caversham. The house was rebuilt in Tudor times but was destroyed by fire. The present house dates from the 1850s. The grounds include the remnants of an early-18th-century formal garden by Stephen Switzer flanking mid-19th-century formal terraces, surrounded by the remains of a landscape park laid out in the 1760s by Lancelot Brown.
