Brief description of site

The policies of Allanton are split between several owners and the house is derelict. A few trees survive from original late-18th-century plantings. The traces of various buildings and the walled garden remain. A lake that was part of the original design has been incorporated into a modern garden.

Brief history of site

Little is known about the designed landscape before Sir Henry Steuart rebuilt the house and redesigned the policies between 1780 and 1830 with the help of Thomas White senior. Steuart used a special machine to transport mature trees. In 1828 he published 'The Planters' Guide' describing his experiences. The property was sold before World War 2 and is now in multiple ownership.
