Brief description of site

Castle Hill is an early-18th-century landscape park and woodland of around 225 hectares, with about 20 hectares of gardens and pleasure grounds. There is a further 1300 hectares of agricultural land.

Brief history of site

Martin Fortescue acquired an estate at Filleigh through marriage in 1454. A house on the site of the present mansion was associated with a detached deer park to the north-east. Castle Hill was first built in the early-1730s by Hugh Fortescue. The estate was expanded and consolidated through the generations of the Fortescue family.
