Brief description of site
The Sandringam estate is set around the house of 1870, and encompasses a country park and formal gardens around the house, as well as woodland and extensive agricultural lands. Conservation is considered to be an important aspect of the maintenance of the estate, so wetland areas have been formed and several thousand trees have been planted.
Brief history of site
A new house was erected in 1771 and a landscape park was created some time before 1794. By 1826 there were formal gardens around the house whilst the landscape beyond to the south extended into open parkland and to the north into dense woodland cut through with rides. In 1862 Sandringham was bought by Edward, Prince of Wales. The old house was demolished and a new house was erected by A J Humbert in the Jacobean style in 1870. The Prince of Wales extended the park slightly on all sides and began the development of the gardens. In 1947, Geoffrey Jellicoe was commissioned to create a simple formal garden north of the house, and in 1968 much of the park was designated the Sandringham Country Park.
