Brief description of site

Winterbourne has extensive gardens of 1903 in the Arts and Crafts style created by Margaret Nettlefold. The gardens surround the large, contemporary, house built for Margaret Nettlefold and her husband John, a Birmingham industrialist.

Brief history of site

The area became popular with industrialists seeking pleasant surroundings for themselves and their families after building leases began to be granted in 1786. Ten acres was acquired by John Nettlefold in 1902. J. L. Ball was commissioned to design the house in the Arts and Crafts style. The house was of deliberately archaic appearance, and was favourably received. The gardens were designed by Margaret Nettlefold who is believed to have been inspired by the books and garden designs of Gertrude Jekyll.
