Brief description of site
Bute Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country. With Pontcanna Fields and Sophia Gardens to the west, it forms a huge space open to the public within the centre of Cardiff.
Brief history of site
Capability Brown was commissioned to modernise Cardiff Castle and the castle green in 1778, but his work did not extend beyond the castle walls. Bute Park was created as the pleasure ground for the Victorian Gothic restoration of Cardiff Castle from the 1860s onwards. It became a public park in 1947.
