Brief description of site

Calke Abbey has a landscape park, pleasure grounds and walled garden, now occupying about 210 hectares, surrounding a hall. The National Trust has restored much of the site and the parkland is now a National Nature Reserve.

Brief history of site

Originally the site of a 12th-century priory, the Elizabethan manor house was remodelled in the early 18th century. William Emes designed the park and pleasure grounds in 1776. The Physic Garden and Flower Garden were moved away from the house at this time.
