Brief description of site

A group of public, communal and domestic gardens, courtyards and squares of 1962-1982 forming an integral part of a housing estate designed by Chamberlain Powell and Bon. The development covers about 15 hectares.

Brief history of site

This had been the site of late-19th century industrial warehouses. After being bombed in World War 2, the area was marked first for commercial use then for residential development. The first plans were drawn in 1956, revised in 1959 and work began in 1962/3.
