Brief description of site

Buxton Pavilion Gardens are public pleasure gardens established by the Duke of Devonshire and the Buxton Improvement Company. Edward Milner designed the gardens and Adam Hogg extended them.

Brief history of site

The area occupied by the Pavilion Gardens was probably first developed as gardens relating to Buxton Hall (see below) in the late 16th century or the 17th century. The Buxton Pavilion Gardens were created between 1869 and 1871. The Buxton Improvement Company was established in 1869 and the gardens were formally opened in 1871. Adam Hogg extended the gardens in 1880.
