Brief description of site
The cemetery is formal in design, and is the only Victorian cemetery to use a consistent Renaissance style. The buildings and layout are by Benjamin Baud.
Brief history of site
The West of London and Westminster Company was established in 1836. A site was proposed and the majority of the land was purchased by 1839. A public competition to design the cemetery was won by Benjamin Baud, who designed a classical conception with dramatic vistas and spaces to overcome the flat and unvaried nature of the site. The cemetery was consecrated in June 1840.
