Brief description of site
The boundary walls, steps and ha-ha are extant. There are two lodges, one classical and a second later Victorian. The classical lodge, which was the main house, is the main entrance to the hotel and golf club. An ice house and the Victorian and formal gardens have been covered by housing.
Brief history of site
Shaw Hill was established in the mid-19th century as a private residence. Owned by Thomas Bright Crosse, the large mansion was remodelled in 1845 after the designs of Mr Charles Reed of Birkenhead. The house possesses a distinctive architectural character. On the north side is a colonnade of the Roman Doric order which extends the whole length. On the West side are terraces commanding fine prospects of the well planted vicinity.
