Brief description of site
Bracken Hill was a late 19th-century garden, developed by the University of Bristol as a botanic garden in the 20th century. The botanic gardens were moved from this site to The Holmes in 2005. (Record updated May 2010)
Brief history of site
The original garden at Bracken Hill was created by Walter Melville Wills in 1896. His son, Captain Douglas Melville Wills, donated Bracken Hill to Bristol University in 1947, and the university established a botanic garden here in 1959. The botanic garden was moved to a site at The Holmes in 2002, and Bracken Hill was sold.
