Brief description of site

The site has a formal Jacobean-style red brick house by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It was designed to house ornate early-17th-century interiors from Bristol. The house is set within a formal arts and crafts style garden design completed by Thomas Mawson, with the possible influence of Gertrude Jekyll.

Brief history of site

New Place house was built in 1906. The house’s design is unique, due to its incorporation of another house’s interior. The gardens at New Place were designed in the early-20th-century. The Franklyn family lived at New Place from 1906 until 1956. At that time, the estate was sold and was converted into a school. In 1978 the estate was sold and became a conference centre. New Place is currently owned by Initial Style Conferences, Ltd.
