Brief description of site
Wicksteed Park is a combination of a leisure park and a country park and is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. It was opened in 1921 and features a large man-made lake, a formal memorial garden, an arboretum and various recreational facilities.
Brief history of site
In 1913 Charles Wicksteed, owner of a local engineering company, bought land from the Barton Seagrave estate on which to build a model village. The estate's designed landscape had been laid out during the late-18th and early-19th century with input from Humphry Repton. Following the First World War public housing became the responsibility of local authorities, so Wicksteed chose instead to concentrate on the creation of the park for public use. The park was opened in 1921.
