Brief description of site

There is a late-18th-century landscape park at Stanford Hall as well as a variety of garden areas developed largely through the 19th century, including a walled garden. Early 20th-century additions include an Italianate courtyard and sports areas.

Brief history of site

In 1558 Queen Mary granted her goldsmith, Robert Raynes, an estate of 486 hectares at Stanford. A stone hall was built on the site in 1641. Thi was demolished in the 1770s and a new brick hall was commissioned. The estate was sold in 1887, after which there were major alterations and extensions to the Hall, the laying out of formal gardens, the remodelling of the early 19th-century walled kitchen garden, and the construction of a stable block. Further changes took place after 1928, including remodelling much of the interior of the Hall, the construction of an adjoining 352-seat Art Deco-style theatre, and laying out an Italian courtyard.
