Brief description of site

Cambridge University Botanic gardens, which occupy about 16 hectares, feature over 10,000 varieties of plants, a wide variety of specimen and mature trees and several separate garden areas. The gardens also contain the first ornamental bamboo collection, laid out in 1846, and symmetrical beds containing specialist collections of tulips, saxifrages, geraniums and woody genera.

Brief history of site

Cambridge University Botanic gardens were established in 1831 and opened to the public in 1846. The gardens were built by Professor John Stevens Henslow on 16 hectares of land which he had acquired. The gardens are said to have inspired former pupil Charles Darwin in his work. In 1950 a research station was added to the gardens.
