Brief description of site
Spye Park consists of a late-18th-century landscape park and pleasure grounds with the remains of early-18th-century work by Stephen Switzer. Further landscaping dates from the late-19th century.
Brief history of site
The first house known as Spye Park was built in about 1645 by the Bayntun family. In the early-18th century Stephen Switzer worked at Spye, recording his work on an Italian cascade. William Emes may have been employed to carry out alterations to the park in the late 18th century. J. W. Spicer demolished the 17th-century house in 1868 and employed the architect William Burn to build a new one, set slightly behind the old house. Since the late 19th century there have been some minor additions to the pleasure grounds but few alterations have been made in the park. In the 1990s the 19th-century house was demolished as a result of fire damage.
