Site timeline

1788: The new house is completed. The flower and kitchen gardens are completed. The main walks network is in place.

1789: A description of Hafod appears in William Gilpin's 'Observations on the River Wye' (2nd edition).

1795: The walled garden is built for Mariamne Johnes (daughter).

1796: 'An Attempt to Describe Hafod' by George Cumberland is published.

1798: J.M.W. Turner paints a watercolour of Hafod House.

1805: The New Walk with chain bridge is completed.

1807: Hafod house is gutted by fire.

1810: The house is rebuilt

1810: Sir James Edward Smith publishes his "Tour to Hafod", illustrated with 15 aquatints after John "Warwick" Smith.

1832: The estate is purchased by the 4th Duke of Newcastle.

1846: The estate is purchased by Henry Hoghton.

1882: The current stable block is built.

1940 to 1950: The wider estate is broken up and sold.

1958: The house is demolished.
