Brief description of site

Sandringham contains 24 hectares of gardens which have been constantly developed by the four generations of the Royal Family who have used the house, adding elements and features fashionable at the time. Features include the Carrstone rockeries, the formal North Garden, lime avenues and various walks.

Brief history of site

A new house was erected in 1771, and by 1826 there were associated formal gardens. In 1862 Sandringham was bought by Edward, Prince of Wales. He began the development of the gardens, including the addition of lakes and a Pulhamite rock garden designed by William Broderick Thomas in the 1870s, as well as an extensive walled garden. In 1947 the ornate bedding schemes were removed and Geoffrey Jellicoe was commissioned to create a simple formal garden north of the house.
