Brief description of site

Belvoir Castle has partially reconstructed and restored gardens, originally laid out by the 5th Duchess of Rutland in 1799. The individual gardens were much influenced by Italian terraced gardens, which the Duchess observed on her Grand Tour.

Brief history of site

The medieval Belvoir park, created in 1306 and probably disparked in the 1460s, lay north-west of the later park. It is likely that the present park was created during the period of post-Civil War reconstruction. The gardens were laid out by Elizabeth, 5th Duchess of Rutland from 1799 to coincide with the construction of the new castle designed by James Wyatt. In 1900 the head gardener, Mr Divers, developed the concept of massed spring-flowering bedding which led to a book, 'Spring Flowers at Belvoir'. The gardens subsequently fell into disrepair but an ongoing process of restoration by the current Duchess aims to return them to their 19th-century condition.
