Brief description of site
Belton House has a 17th-century landscape park of 270 hectares with later 18th-century additions, and 19th-century ornamental gardens of four hectares.
Brief history of site
Sir John Brownlow (1594-1679), first Baronet of Belton, created formal gardens and the Great Pond. The landscape park was designed for his heir, another Sir John Brownlow in 1685. He created new formal gardens and ponds. Sir Brownlow Cust (1744-1807), seventh baronet, inherited in 1770 and under his ownership major alterations were made to the garden and park. Commissioned by Lord Brownlow, William Emes (1730-1803) prepared a Plan of the Park, but it was largely unexecuted.
