Brief description of site

Belgravia Square ia an early-19th century private square covering about 2 hectares. The development was begun in 1825 by Thomas Cubitt, with George Basevi as architect, and was completed about 1827. The layout and planting became more ornate during the late-19th century.

Brief history of site

A plan for part of the area, known since 1851 as Belgravia, was drawn up before 1813 by a Mr Wyatt (probably James Wyatt or Thomas Wyatt) but not executed. Thomas Cundy adapted the plan, which was ready in 1825, and building leases were sold to a number of contractors. The first square to be laid out was Belgrave Square. It was started in 1825, largely built by George Basevi.
