Brief description of site

Valley Gardens, Harrogate are ornamental municipal gardens. The site originated as open land with natural sulphur and chalybeate springs. Features include a boating lake, the Sun Pavilion and Colonnades.

Brief history of site

The site became common land in 1778, and was slowly improved throughout the 19th century and beyond. Before 1887 the gardens were a romantic dell. The main phase of development was between 1880 and 1910, with some later alterations. The gardens were enhanced and formalised with rose gardens, a long rockery, floral displays and unusual plant varieties and species.
