Brief description of site

Tyninghame is situated just north of the Tyne estuary. There is well-preserved 19th-century parkland planting and the rare survival of an early-18th-century formal grid structure based on three avenues or walks leading for over a mile to the sea. Around the house are early-19th-century formal terraced gardens which lead through an early-20th-century woodland garden to a formal walled garden whose walls were constructed in the mid-18th century. This garden is rectangular with a rounded end and is internally divided by yew hedges and a broad walk. It has 20th-century planting schemes.

Brief history of site

Tyninghame is one of the most ancient settled sites in Scotland and dates from the 7th century. It has been associated with the Earls of Haddington since the early-17th century.
