Brief history of site
Founded in 1845, this is one of the earliest municipal cemeteries to be opened in England. The original cemetery was divided into two sections. One area was for Anglicans and the other for Dissenters. Each section had its own chapel. In the 1960s the two chapels were demolished by Leeds City Council. The Friends of Beckett Street Cemetery formed in 1984 after threat of clearance.
