Brief description of site

The square site is on elevated ground. Views from the cemetery are limited by the high boundary walls. Features include a notable group of guinea graves, separate entrances to the Anglican and Nonconformist areas, grass glades, a war memorial and several funerary monuments of interest.

Brief history of site

Founded in 1845, this is one of the earliest municipal cemeteries to be opened in England. The original cemetery was divided into two sections. One area was for Anglicans and the other for Dissenters. Each section had its own chapel. In the 1960s the two chapels were demolished by Leeds City Council. The Friends of Beckett Street Cemetery formed in 1984 after threat of clearance.
