Brief description of site

Trafalgar Square features Nelson's Column (1843), fountains (1845) and bronze lions designed by Edwin Landseer in 1867, as well as many other sculptures and listed buildings.

Brief history of site

The site of Trafalgar Square was originally the Great Mews for Whitehall Palace. It was redeveloped from the 1820s onwards as a key part of John Nash's plans for the West End. The square was designed to enhance the setting of the National Gallery and to connect the Strand with the West End.
