Brief description of site
Sudeley Castle has 19th- and 20th-century formal gardens of 4 hectares within medieval parkland of around 40 hectares.
Brief history of site
In 1441, Ralph Boteler undertook the rebuilding of the Castle and the construction of St Mary's chapel, the Banqueting Hall, the Great Barn, and the Portmare Tower. The Castle was sold to Edward IV in 1469, and remained associated with the Royal family until the Civil War. The Castle and parkland were damaged during the Commonwealth and following the Civil War were left semi-derelict for 188 years. John and William Dent, with their brother, the Rev Benjamin Dent, set about restoring the Castle and chapel and laid out the formal gardens in the mid-19th century. Lady Ashcombe has, since the 1970s, laid out several new formal gardens around the Castle.
