Brief description of site
Batsford Park covers around 115 hectares. It contains a late-19th-century ornamental Japanese garden and an arboretum of 20 hectares. John Davenport provided a plan for landscape improvements in 1783, although these were not executed.
Brief history of site
In 1608 Batsford was owned by John Croker. Later it was owned by Richard Freeman (died 1710), in whose time a classical front was added to an older and rambling house, and perhaps modest formal gardens laid out around it. The estate passed to Thomas Edwards around 1756, and it was apparently in his time that the older, formal setting of the house was removed in favour of a landscape park. From 1888, the house was rebuilt on a new site and in the 1890s the Wild Garden was laid out and specimen trees were planted.
