Brief description of site

Spains Hall has a 16th-century walled garden with a 19th-century formal garden in parkland originally of 17 hectares. The house and gardens are now used as a hotel.

Brief history of site

Spains Hall in its present form was built in about 1585 by William Kempe, who also created walled gardens to the east of the Hall within which he built a banqueting house and a small park. Repairs, alterations and development were undertaken from 1795, and in 1807 Humphry Repton was commissioned. Herbaceous borders, flower gardens and a pergola were added in the late-19th and early-20th century. Few changes have been made to the landscape during the 20th century, although the gardens have been simplified.
