Brief description of site

Laid out in the late-1850s and early-1860s, the Southampton Central Parks (West Park, East Park, Palmerston Park, Houndwell, Hoglands and Queen's Park) provide a chain of 21 hectares of public open space through the heart of the city.

Brief history of site

During the 1840s, several town improvement schemes which included open spaces for recreation were considered. Work started slowly on the parks in 1846 but gained momentum in the 1850s.
