Brief description of site

Sissinghurst Castle gardens are among the most famous 20th-century gardens. The gardens surround the surviving parts of an Elizabethan mansion and are made up of 10 separate and distinct garden 'rooms' each with a different feel and planting scheme. There is also a further 16 hectares of parkland.

Brief history of site

Contemporary records suggest that the site of the gardens at Sissinghurst Castle was occupied by a moated manor house in the late 12th century. The house was largely demolished in the late-18th century. The present gardens were created and the buildings restored in the l930s by Harold Nicholson and Vita Sackville-West.
