Brief description of site

Purley Hall has an early-18th century formal landscape set within a later park.

Brief history of site

Francis Hyde built Purley Hall (formerly known as Hyde Hall) in 1609. Francis Hawes employed Charles Bridgeman in about 1720-1 to produce a design for the garden. The garden retained its formal layout during the mid-18th century. During the 20th century the Hall was leased, remaining empty during the Second World War. A period of restoration in the garden took place during the 1980s.
