Brief history of site
Francis Hyde built Purley Hall (formerly known as Hyde Hall) in 1609. Francis Hawes employed Charles Bridgeman in about 1720-1 to produce a design for the garden. The garden retained its formal layout during the mid-18th century. During the 20th century the Hall was leased, remaining empty during the Second World War. A period of restoration in the garden took place during the 1980s.
