Brief description of site
The parkland, woodland and gardens at Balnagown Castle had a long historical association with the Clan Ross. The structure of a mid-19th-century terraced Italian garden survives and there is an unusual early-19th-century semi-circular walled garden, which is still fully productive. Late-20th-century ornamental gardens have been developed near the restored house.
Brief history of site
Balnagowan was built as a defensive stronghold in the 14th century. The lairds of Ross laid out the landscape around the castle in the late-17th century. The grounds were completely cleared and redesigned in the mid-19th century in the Picturesque style.
The estate stayed in the hands of the Ross family until 1972 when the new owner launched a restoration programme. Luxury self-catering cottages are now available on the estate.
