The grotto and tunnel, built for 18th-century poet Alexander Pope, are the only surviving features of his original two-hectare garden.
Brief history of site
The grotto was built for Alexander Pope between 1720 and 1725. It was originally a shell grotto, but in 1739 Pope became interested in geology, and transformed the structure by the addition of mineral and geological specimens.
