Brief description of site
People's Park is a public park of around 5.5 hectares laid out in 1856 by Sir Joseph Paxton and Edward Milner and opened in 1857. It was donated by the local manufacturer Sir Francis Crossley. After a period of decline the park has recently (from 1995) undergone restoration.
Brief history of site
Sir Frances Crossley presented the land to the town, and commissioned Sir Joseph Paxton to lay it out as a park in 1856.
