Brief description of site
Penshurst Place is a medieval deer park dating from around 1346. The park of 178 hectares surrounds the formal walled gardens of four hectares. The wider estate is 1000 hectares in size.
Brief history of site
Sir John de Pulteney built the present house at Penshurst in 1341. The site passed to the first Duke of Buckingham in 1447. It became Crown property when the Duke was beheaded for treason in 1521. Edward VI gifted it to the Sidney family in 1552, and the site remains in the hands of their descendants.
