Brief description of site

The designed landscape at Newton Don has grazed parkland and attractive mixed woodland dating from the early 19th-century. Shrubberies and flower gardens date to the late 19th-century. The Eden Water and its waterfall is a distinctive feature of the estate.

Brief history of site

From the 14th century until the late 17th century the estate was in the hands of the Newtons. The Dons owned it until 1847, when it was sold to the Balfours.
The original designed landscape was laid out in the early 19th century. Charles Barrington Balfour and his wife Nina developed the ornamental gardens from the late 19th century.
