Brief description of site

The picturesque ruins of Abergavenny Castle are landscaped with 19th-century walks overlooking the Usk valley. In the late-19th century there were further garden developments and the castle walls were embellished with gazebos. All that remains of this phase is a level lawn and a raised rockery.

Brief history of site

The motte was built around 1087. The castle was destroyed in 1233 and the keep was re-built in stone. Much was destroyed during the Civil War, and the building now used as the museum was built on the motte in 1818.
