Mamhead, (also known as Mamhead Park), Teignbridge, England
Record Id: 2206
This site is NOT open to public.
Brief description of site
Mamhead consists of 18th-century parkland and woodland covering about 400 hectares, now in divided use and ownership. There are the remains of 19th-century formal gardens beside the house.
Brief history of site
Sir Peter Balle (a noted sylviculturist, died 1680) rebuilt an existing house near the parish church in the mid-17th century. The early- and mid-18th-century gardens are shown in a painting of about 1780, and were formal, with terraces, fountains and pools. In 1769 Robert Adam provided plans for the improvement of the house and alteration of a cascade house, which appear to have been implemented, while in 1778 the grounds were improved with the advice of Lancelot Brown. A new mansion designed by Anthony Salvin was built from 1828.
