Brief description of site
The designed landscape at Lennoxlove still contains a few features from the 17th-century layout, such as the replanted avenue known as the Politicians Walk and diagonal access roads. There is interesting tree planting around the house and an early-20th-century ornamental sunken garden with broad herbaceous borders. Further flower gardens were added later in the 20th century.
Brief history of site
Lennoxlove has been lived in continuously since the 14th century. The designed landscape was laid out in the mid-16th century for William Maitland and improved in the 17th century when the first enclosed park in Scotland was created. In the late-18th century it was redesigned as an informal landscape. Sir Robert Lorimer designed a sunken garden in 1912. Since 1946 the estate has been owned by the Dukes of Hamilton and the property re-opened as an exclusive-use venue in 2008.
