Brief description of site
Knightshayes Court is a 19th -entury formal and terraced garden, with later 20th century woodland gardens of around 16 hectares. The formal gardens are set within a larger park, woodland and agricultural estate.
Brief history of site
The land was probably part of Tiverton Castle's park, but was disparked in the early-16th century. A house was built in around 1720, which was replaced by a new structure in 1787. John Veitch worked on the site in 1794. A new mansion designed by William Burges was completed in 1872. Edward Kemp designed terraced gardens to the south of the new house, an American Garden in the valley to the north-west, and the formal layout of Burges' kitchen garden. The terraces were simpleifed, and new garden areas were laid out from 1950 onwards. In 1972, Knightshayes Court and part of the parkland was given to the National Trust
