Brief description of site
The site consists of a landscape park and woodland of about 300 hectares, with formal gardens occupying about 2 hectares. The gardens were laid out in Victorian times in the Italianate style, and simplified by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1911.
Brief history of site
Around 1500 Sir Robert Lytton built a new, four-sided courtyard house attached to the existing 15th-century gatehouse. The estate remained largely unaltered until the early-19th century, when the majority of the house was demolished, leaving only one wing, which was gothicised at the same time. Elaborate formal gardens were created after 1843, with ornate flower beds, fountains, statues and shrubbery walks. In 1908 Edwin Lutyens carried out work in the house and simplified the garden design.
