Brief description of site
The current layout of the designed landscape at Kelburn Castle dates from about 1855. There is parkland with specimen trees, a terraced garden whose walls date from the 18th century, a late-19th-century New Zealand garden, and a small formal garden. The wider estate features a romantic glen and woodland walks.
Brief history of site
Kelburn Castle has been the seat of the Boyle family and the Earls of Glasgow since the 13th century. A major change in the layout of the designed landscape occurred between 1750 and 1780. The present layout dates from the mid-19th century. Kelburn Country Centre was opened in the late-1970s and part of the parkland was converted into a golf course. The Castle is available as a conference centre and wedding venue.
