Brief description of site
The designed landscape at Inveraray Castle dates largely from the mid-19th century in its present form. It includes parkland with an 18th-century lime avenue, some contemporary broadleaved woodland and some 19th-century conifer plantings. The formal parterre gardens retain their mid-19th-century layout with paths in the shape of the St Andrew's Cross.
Brief history of site
Inverary Castle is the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Argyll. The first designed landscape dates from the mid-17th century, was altered in the 1720s and completely redesigned in the mid-18th century. In the early-19th century the formal landscape had been transformed into an informal layout. Extensive woodlands and the gardens around the castle date from the mid-19th century.
