Brief description of site
Athelhampton has late-19th- and early-20th-century formal gardens and grounds of around 7 hectares. The gardens have been restored and developed since 1957. They are set beside a 15th- and 16th-century house with significant later alterations.
Brief history of site
The Great Hall, Solar and Buttery were created and a 160-acre deer park was enclosed between about 1485 and 1495. The formal gardens were created at the end of the 19th century with further developments by a second designer in the early-20th century. There have also been mid-20th-century additions to the gardens, and the renovation of the house and gardens is ongoing today (2009).
