Brief description of site

Hethersett is a late-19th-century woodland garden of 5 hectares. It contains an extensive plant collection, associated with a small country house.

Brief history of site

The house was built in 1873 by Harry Mangles, whose brother James was one of the earliest rhododendron collectors and hybridisers. Most of James' plant collection was brought to Hethersett after his death in 1884. Gertrude Jekyll lived nearby, and in 1889 met Lutyens for the first time at this site.
