Brief description of site
The manor of Ashby St Ledgers originates before Domesday (1086) and includes medieval and 17th century buildings. The garden now has a formal layout with traces of 17th century gardens. The site now occupies about 30 hectares within a manorial estate of about 945 hectares in separate ownership. The present garden derives from a design by Lutyens in 1904. Other Lutyens buildings and structures, including the Cenotaph, exist in the village.
Brief history of site
The main house was built in 1652. In 1903, the estate was sold to the Hon Ivor Guest. He employed Edwin Lutyens from 1904 in a series of commissions to remodel and enlarge the house and to lay out new gardens.
