Brief description of site

Encombe is an 18th-century landscape park with lakes, woodland and agricultural land. The central area of gardens surrounding the house is about 8 hectares.

Brief history of site

A new house was built on the site from 1735, incorporating elements of an earlier building. The house was completed in around 1770, and an extensive park was formed, with a circuit of carriage drives allowing a succession of views and incidents, including a cascade on the coast, a picturesque grotto, and a lake south of the house. The park was extended in the very late-18th century. The house was re-modelled by Anthony Salvin in around 1870.
