Brief description of site
The parkland, woodland and formal garden at Dumfries House are associated with a mid-18th-century Palladian mansion, although some of the parkland planting is from an earlier date. The formal garden is a parterre on two levels. After renovation the house opened to the public in June 2008.
Brief history of site
By the mid-18th century there was considerable planting at Dumfries House, including a formal wilderness with rides aligned on mounts. A new house was designed and built by Robert, John and James Adam between 1748 and 1759 for the 5th Earl of Dumfries. Further landscaping was carried out after this. The estate was sold by the Marquess of Bute in 2007 to a consortium of charities that manage the estate and open the house to the public.
